We need your support to be able to restore the Josephinum’s collections and to put safeguarding measures in place for the future.
The Josephinum’s collection of anatomical wax models comes together to create an integrated work of art, one of its key features being the range of materials, the state of repair of each considerably influencing all the others.
Age, mechanical stress and poor climatic conditions are causing considerable damage to the wax objects. These now need restoration and repair, while further damage can be reduced through constant care and conservation, as well as by improving the conditions in which they are kept.
Similarly, many of the Josephinum’s highly valuable books – works on the history of ideas and of science, published between 1500 and 1850 – have suffered a range of damage over the centuries: torn pages, broken covers, mice gnawing at the body of the books, loose bindings, pest infestations and much more besides.
The Josephinum is predominantly financed from the budget of the Medical University of Vienna. We will be unable to take the necessary measures to preserve the wax models and books without additional financial means.
Joining the Friends of the Josephinum, sponsoring a valuable object and making a donation are all invaluable ways of helping us maintain and preserve this unique cultural heritage.
