Architecture and Medicine
To mark the 240th anniversary of the Josephinum, the new special exhibition is dedicated to the development of Vienna's extensive medical district, founded by Emperor Joseph II in the late 18th century. It focuses on the Josephinum and the Vienna General Hospital – two significant buildings that reflect medical, social, and technological change over the centuries.
The exhibition demonstrates how scientific advances shaped hospital architecture – from the neoclassical ideal to modern functional buildings. Historical images and contemporary photographs by Margherita Spiluttini, Stefan Oláh, and Reiner Riedler illustrate these transformations and provide insights into everyday life behind these walls. Particular attention is paid to the Josephinum's role as a medical training center and the "New Clinics" of the Vienna General Hospital, whose architecture set pioneering standards.
